Christy Beck, 42, fears she will never become a mother after years of trying with husband Ryan, 39, to conceive and has tried numerous treatments without success. They spent £23,000 on their last IVF, luckily and they had three babies.
Christy doubted she could be pregnant because she was in her 40s and consulted fertility specialists. Knowing their biological clock was against them, they tried IUI and IVF without success. After a vacation after a failed IVF attempt and considering adoption options, they decided to give their own children one last try.
The American couple from Richmond, Virginia, took out a big debt of $30,000 (£23,000) out of desperation in order to perform one last round of IVF. And when initial scans revealed Christy was pregnant and expecting twins, the pair was ecstatic. They had transferred two embryos to improve their chances of success.
A 12-week ultrasound discovered a “hidden” third baby, but the couple were faced with a terrible dilemma – whether to abort one child or risk losing two. . They refused to lose one of the babies, because carrying triplets was fraught with risks.
The couple has experienced miracles and good fortune; five months ago, Christy gave birth to twins Cali and Elli and her “little miracle,” Rockwell. We took a tremendous risk by taking on debt; if it failed, we would still owe $30,000 and be unable to have children.
“We were told that because identical twins shared a placenta, one could not receive enough blood and the other lost their chance of survival,” Christy said. They gave me the choice to abort one of my children or risk losing my twins.”
It’s crazy to go from the joy of a third baby to talking about ending one of them. No matter how much we long for you, we have no right to take your life. And we decided to keep it, and try to take back our baby’s life. For the rest of my pregnancy, I was always nervous and kept asking if all three were breathing, if they had a heartbeat, were all limbs, fingers, toes gone. Surely that is the feeling of mothers when they are carrying the body of their children.
When she was 20 weeks pregnant, she had limited mobility and was confined to bed. In addition to the difficulties in moving, she also struggled with pain and acid reflux from the three children weighing heavily on her gallbladder. What she went through was worth it, when the angels were born so peaceful and healthy.
But now you are a miracle. Wonderful. I never thought I would be able to have children, and yet I have always wanted them so much. It was such a beautiful moment, I remember hearing my little boy, who came out first, crying and that was the moment I broke down in tears.
